WEST DWIGHT C – U.S. ARMY DOG TAG
I found this dog tag in Vietnam, in an area that once had a strong American military presence.
When you spend time in places like this, you realize how close the Vietnam War still feels. Objects like this are quiet reminders of the people who were there.
This tag carries the name West Dwight C.
U.S. Army.

RA stands for Regular Army. It usually means the soldier enlisted rather than being drafted.
The number 14481812 is the service number used before the full transition to Social Security numbers.
A Pos refers to blood type A positive. This was critical information for medics in case of injury.
The number 245-44-2580 is a Social Security number. During the Vietnam War period, the U.S. Army gradually moved from service numbers to SSN for identification.
Baptist indicates religious preference. This was included so that proper rites could be given if needed.
Dog tags were worn at all times, usually as a pair. One remained with the soldier, the other was used for records if necessary.
This is an authentic piece. It is not a reproduction.
