GRYBOS CALL J – U.S. ARMY DOG TAG

I found this dog tag in Vietnam, in an area that once had a strong American military presence.

When you spend time in places like this, you start to see how close the Vietnam War still feels. Objects like this are small but direct connections to real people.

This tag carries the name Grybos Call J.

U.S. Army.

RA 15 742 023

B

Catholic

RA stands for Regular Army. This usually means the soldier enlisted rather than being drafted.

The number 15 742 023 is a service number. Before the full use of Social Security numbers, this was the main way soldiers were identified.

The letter B refers to blood type B. This was essential information for medics in case of injury in the field.

Catholic indicates the soldier's religious preference. This was included so that proper rites could be given if needed.

Dog tags were worn at all times, usually in pairs. One remained with the soldier and the other was used for identification if necessary.

This is an authentic piece. It is not a reproduction.
