Metal Detecting in the United States
There is no single permission covering metal detecting everywhere in the United States. Recreational detecting is prohibited in parks managed by the National Park Service. National Forest guidance allows certain searches for lost coins, jewellery and other objects without historical value, but archaeological and historical resources remain protected, and local restrictions must still be checked. The Bureau of Land Management also distinguishes modern money from historic coins and cultural objects, which must be left in place. Before searching, identify who actually manages the land. Ask the relevant office about a particular beach, campground, state park or municipal park, and obtain the owner’s permission for private land. Do not apply the rules for one type of public land to another.
Detector Lady recommends: Before travelling with your metal detector, always check the rules of the relevant land manager and the conditions for the exact place you want to search.
