Metal Detecting in Ukraine

Ukraine is affected by the ongoing war following Russia’s invasion. As of 29 October 2026, the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs warns against travel to the entire country. Missile and drone attacks, mines and unexploded ammunition make a recreational detecting trip particularly dangerous. Explosive hazards can occur away from the current front lines and in places where fighting happened previously. I do not recommend travelling to Ukraine for metal detecting while these conditions continue. Ukrainian heritage legislation also requires authorisation for archaeological searches and restricts the use of detecting equipment at heritage sites. A landowner’s agreement does not remove those requirements or make a location safe. If you encounter suspected ammunition, do not approach, touch or attempt to recover it. Notify the authorities.

Detector Lady recommends: Postpone recreational detecting trips to Ukraine. Follow current official travel warnings and local restrictions rather than planning a search around older online advice.
