Metal Detecting in Slovenia

In Slovenia, searching for archaeological remains with a detector requires prior permission from the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Heritage of Slovenia. The applicant must demonstrate the required professional competence and submit a search programme describing the purpose, methods, equipment, area and timing. This is not a general recreational detecting licence, although the official framework provides routes for applicants with suitable qualifications or recognised experience. If you accidentally discover archaeological remains, preserve them in their original position and notify the institute by the next working day. For searches limited to modern losses, ask the institute and the land manager how the rules apply to your exact plans.

Detector Lady recommends: Before travelling with your metal detector, always check the country’s current rules and the conditions for the exact place you want to search.
