Metal Detecting in Portugal
Portugal has a specific law on metal detectors. It prohibits using them to search for objects relevant to history, art, numismatics or archaeology outside the applicable authorisation framework. Restrictions also concern unlicensed detector use and transport for searching at protected archaeological monuments and sites. Beaches should not be treated as an automatic exception: the National Maritime Authority directs enquiries about detector use to the cultural heritage licensing framework, and local maritime rules may impose additional requirements. Before travelling, obtain written guidance from Património Cultural and the relevant harbour master’s office, known as the Capitania. Permission from a hotel or landowner alone is not enough to settle the legal position.
Detector Lady recommends: Before travelling with your metal detector, always check the country’s current rules and the conditions for the exact place you want to search.
