Metal Detecting in Peru

Peru’s cultural heritage rules make unauthorised excavation at archaeological sites and cemeteries a serious issue. Archaeological interventions are governed by a Ministry of Culture framework, so a visitor should not treat permission from a landowner as approval to search for and excavate historical objects. I could not confirm a blanket national permission for recreational detecting aimed exclusively at modern beach losses. Before planning a search, ask the relevant Ministry of Culture office and the local land or beach authority about the exact place, equipment use and digging. An unmarked area should not be assumed to contain no archaeological heritage.

Detector Lady recommends: Before travelling with your metal detector, always check the country’s current rules and the conditions for the exact place you want to search.
