Metal Detecting in Norway

Norway allows private metal detecting, but that comes with responsibilities towards both landowners and cultural heritage. Obtain the necessary landowner permission and avoid automatically protected archaeological sites and their protection zones. Protection can also apply to sites that have not yet been discovered or registered. Ownerless objects dating from before 1537 and coins from before 1650 fall under state ownership rules, alongside other protected categories. If you encounter a possible protected find, preserve its location and contact the relevant county heritage authority or the Sámi Parliament where appropriate. Norway’s official detecting guide is a useful place to start planning a responsible search.

Detector Lady recommends: Before travelling with your metal detector, always check the country’s current rules and the conditions for the exact place you want to search.
