Metal Detecting in the Netherlands
The Netherlands has a specific exemption allowing detectorists to recover archaeological objects on land within the upper 30 centimetres of soil, subject to important restrictions. It does not apply to underwater detecting, protected archaeological monuments or active archaeological excavations. Municipalities can also introduce local prohibitions, so a place that looks suitable may still be off limits. You need the landowner’s permission, and archaeological finds must be reported through the appropriate system, such as the Cultural Heritage Agency or PAN. The 30 centimetre rule is a maximum limit, not permission to dig anywhere. Check both heritage restrictions and municipal rules before starting.
Detector Lady recommends: Before travelling with your metal detector, always check the country’s current rules and the conditions for the exact place you want to search.
