Metal Detecting in Mexico

In Mexico, work intended to discover or explore archaeological monuments is reserved to INAH or appropriately authorised institutions under federal heritage law. This is not an activity that a tourist can authorise simply by obtaining a landowner’s consent. Archaeological discoveries must also be reported to the nearest civil authority. I could not confirm a blanket national permission covering recreational detecting for modern losses on every beach. If that is your plan, check with the relevant municipality or beach manager and the local INAH centre, especially where archaeological remains may be present. An accessible beach is not automatically a permitted place to dig or collect historical objects.

Detector Lady recommends: Before travelling with your metal detector, always check the country’s current rules and the conditions for the exact place you want to search.
