Metal Detecting in Malta
Malta’s Cultural Heritage Act places archaeological excavation and exploration for cultural property within a scientific research framework. These activities may be carried out by the Superintendent or with the Superintendent’s written permission and under the specified conditions. The requirements include a research proposal, methodology and arrangements for conservation and publication. This is not a general permission for visitors to search for historical objects. I could not confirm a separate nationwide rule allowing recreational detecting for modern losses on beaches. Before travelling, ask the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage about your exact plans and check access with the responsible land or beach manager.
Detector Lady recommends: Before travelling with your metal detector, always check the country’s current rules and the conditions for the exact place you want to search.
