Metal Detecting in Malaysia

Malaysia’s Department of National Heritage explicitly states that searching and excavating for archaeological sites or relics requires an excavation licence from the Heritage Commissioner. The National Heritage Act also contains an excavation licensing requirement, with landowner consent among the conditions for approval. This is why I would not assume that carrying a detector or receiving a property owner’s invitation automatically allows digging. I could not verify a nationwide exemption for tourists recovering modern beach losses. Before searching, describe both the detecting and the intended digging to the heritage department and the relevant state or local authority, and request guidance for the exact location.

Detector Lady recommends: Before travelling with your metal detector, always check the country’s current rules and the conditions for the exact place you want to search.
