Metal Detecting in Madagascar
Madagascar’s published heritage legislation requires authorisation for excavations and research of archaeological or historical interest throughout the country. When the applicant is not the landowner, the owner’s consent must accompany the application. The legislation also provides for state ownership of the results of such authorised research, subject to specific exceptions, and requires relevant accidental discoveries to be reported to local authorities within three days. I could not confirm a separate national permission for tourist detecting aimed only at modern beach losses. Before travelling, ask the responsible heritage ministry and local authorities to confirm the current procedure and the rules for your intended location.
Detector Lady recommends: Before travelling with your metal detector, always check the country’s current rules and the conditions for the exact place you want to search.
