Metal Detecting in Latvia

Latvia’s National Heritage Board explains that metal detecting is not prohibited in itself, but important restrictions apply. Detector use at state protected cultural monuments and within their protection zones requires the board’s permission. You must also respect property rights and cannot simply search someone else’s land. Any antiquity or possible antiquity must be reported to the board within five days, regardless of where it was discovered. Older archaeological finds can fall under state ownership rules, so do not assume that a coin belongs to you because you found it outside a known site. Check the location and reporting requirements before your first search.

Detector Lady recommends: Before travelling with your metal detector, always check the country’s current rules and the conditions for the exact place you want to search.
