Metal Detecting in Laos
In Laos, unexploded ordnance is an essential part of any conversation about metal detecting. Official travel advice warns that unexploded weapons remain a hazard across the country, advises visitors to keep to main routes in rural areas and specifically says not to pick up metal objects. I would not recommend independent detecting or digging in ground that has not been confirmed safe by the responsible authorities. I also could not verify a general tourist permission for hobby detecting. Cultural heritage is separately regulated, including restrictions on exporting archaeological objects. Check with local heritage authorities and the national unexploded ordnance authority before considering any search.
Detector Lady recommends: Before travelling with your metal detector, always check the country’s current rules and the conditions for the exact place you want to search.
