Metal Detecting in Italy

Italy allows the possession and use of metal detectors, but that does not give private hobbyists permission to search for archaeological objects. Archaeological research is reserved to the Ministry of Culture or those holding the appropriate concession, including on private land and outside known archaeological sites. If you accidentally discover an archaeological object, you must report it within 24 hours to the Soprintendenza, the mayor or the public security authorities, and normally leave it where it was found. For modern beach losses, check the applicable local rules and permission to search. A beach is not automatically exempt from heritage protection.

Detector Lady recommends: Before travelling with your metal detector, always check the country’s current rules and the conditions for the exact place you want to search.
