Metal Detecting in Ireland
In the Republic of Ireland, using a metal detector to search for archaeological objects anywhere on land or underwater requires prior ministerial consent. Using or possessing a detection device at a protected archaeological site also requires the appropriate consent. Landowner permission does not replace these requirements, and archaeological objects are not limited to spectacular ancient treasures. The National Museum explains that consent for archaeological detecting is normally associated with qualified archaeological work or approved supervision. Do not assume that an ordinary field or beach is automatically suitable for hobby searching. Northern Ireland has a separate legal system and must be checked independently.
Detector Lady recommends: Before travelling with your metal detector, always check the country’s current rules and the conditions for the exact place you want to search.
