Metal Detecting in India

For India, I would not rely on a simple statement that metal detecting is either allowed or banned everywhere. The national archaeological rules require a licence for archaeological excavation in protected areas, apart from specified official work, and provide a separate process for archaeological excavation in unprotected areas. These rules do not establish general permission for tourists to search beaches or fields with a detector. Before travelling, ask the relevant Archaeological Survey of India office and state authorities about your exact location and activity. Confirm land access and any equipment import requirements separately rather than assuming archaeological permission covers everything.

Detector Lady recommends: Before travelling with your metal detector, always check the country’s current rules and the conditions for the exact place you want to search.
