Metal Detecting in Denmark

Denmark allows metal detecting on many areas with the landowner’s permission, but there are important limits. You must not detect on protected ancient monuments or within two metres of them, and special rules apply to land managed by the Nature Agency. Recovering a target must not become an archaeological excavation or go below the normal ploughsoil or upper topsoil. Some discoveries qualify as danefæ and belong to the state. Contact the local archaeological museum about recording and handing in finds rather than assuming that everything you recover is yours to keep.

Detector Lady recommends: Before travelling with your metal detector, always check the country’s current rules and the conditions for the exact place you want to search.
