Metal Detecting in Costa Rica
Costa Rica protects its archaeological heritage, and archaeological research projects are subject to approval by the National Archaeological Commission and supervision by the National Museum. Searching for historical objects should therefore not be confused with looking for recently lost jewellery on a beach. I could not confirm a general national permission covering ordinary hobby detecting for modern items. Before searching, check with the landowner or site manager and the relevant authorities, particularly in protected areas. Suspected archaeological discoveries should be reported to the National Museum.
Detector Lady recommends: Before travelling with your metal detector, always check the country’s current rules and the conditions for the exact place you want to search.
