Metal Detecting in Colombia

In Colombia, any exploration or intervention involving archaeological heritage requires prior authorisation from ICANH, the Colombian Institute of Anthropology and History. This applies on private land too, so the owner’s consent does not replace archaeological authorisation. The official research framework includes surveying, excavation and other work involving archaeological material. These provisions do not establish a general permission for every search for modern lost items. Before detecting on a beach or elsewhere, confirm the local access rules and whether your planned activity falls under heritage or other restrictions.

Detector Lady recommends: Before travelling with your metal detector, always check the country’s current rules and the conditions for the exact place you want to search.
