Metal Detecting in Botswana

Botswana’s Monuments and Relics Act requires written permission for archaeological research and for excavating or exposing buried relics or artefacts. Archaeological discoveries must also be reported without delay. These provisions do not establish a general permission for ordinary hobby detecting or searching for modern lost items. I would contact the authorities responsible for museums and heritage before searching, explain the purpose and location, and obtain any necessary land access permission separately.
